How to Get Adjusted in a New Country and Make Yourself at Home

The transition to a new college may be difficult, especially if you have to move to a different country. It is common for every student to go through a phase of cultural adjustment. There is a phase of initial euphoria and excitement once you land in the new country. At this stage, there is a superficial involvement in the host culture and you may find the new culture very intriguing. However, with the passage of time, you may have extra concerns to contend with, or may find major differences between your home culture and new culture, and may begin making stereotypes and prejudices. In order to overcome such issues, it is necessary to make the necessary adjustments to make yourself feel at home.

The best way to adjust in the new country is to be mentally prepared to take on life as it comes your way. The following four tips will throw light on how to cope with the cultural differences when you take a decision to travel and study abroad.

  1. Read about the new place before you arrive

Gathering up information about the new country is a must-do. Prepare for your trip by conducting a thorough research either through the internet or read books about the culture, travel spots, cuisines, besides others. In case you are not too familiar with the language, take a course in your home country. This will make the transition easier.

  1. Ask questions in case of any doubt

Learning to function in an altogether new country may be difficult in the beginning. It is therefore imperative to understand that it is totally natural to feel anxious. Keep reminding yourself that such feelings are only temporary and will resolve over time. You may ask your landlord or your local friends about any doubts you may have about the neighborhood. You may also discuss your concerns with international students as they too may be facing similar issues.

  1. Be open-minded

Every student who wishes to travel and study abroad needs some time to adjust to their new environment. The key is to react to a particular situation in a wise manner. If you find yourself in an unfamiliar situation, take it on as a new adventure. Be open to new possibilities and most importantly, be curious about the ways of life in the new place.

  1. Explore your surroundings

Instead of being confined in your room, get out of your comfort zone and explore the place. You may download the map of the area and may begin visiting coffee houses, parks, museums, and other public places. You may also take walks or may get into athletic activities. It is important to not isolate yourself.

Remember, it is quite normal to experience challenges at the beginning of your stay. The key, however, is to recognize the challenges and work towards overcoming them. Over time, you will develop greater confidence in your ability to navigate through new situations. You may take help of a foreign education consultant, who will guide you and brief you about the transition process.

We at Study and Work Abroad provide personal counseling to students to make their transition process easier. Such in-depth counseling prepares you to effectively tackle challenges that may come your way.
