The Universal College of Learning or UCOL is an award winning, government-funded institute of technology and polytechnic with three campuses in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand. Their vision is that together they can create great futures through innovative education and training. The campuses are at Palmerston North, Whanganui, Wairarapa, Auckland.

Why choose The Universal College of Learning?

UCOL – Universal College of Learning – was founded in 1906 and was known as the Palmerston North Technical School. In 1971 it became the Palmerston North Technical Institute and in 1983 the Manawatu Polytechnic. At the time it specialized in apprenticeship courses for the trade sectors, and in hobby, art and craft classes. It also developed a range of night school programs in business studies for working adults. UCOL now delivers foundation and Certificate programs, Diplomas, Degrees and some Post Graduate options across a wide range of subjects as well as community-based programs. In late 1998 the Manawatu Polytechnic changed its name to the Universal College of Learning (UCOL).

Hospitality Courses – Open the door to a great career in hospitality.  UCOL Polytech offers great Hospitality courses which will teach you all the ‘front-of-house’ skills needed to work in restaurants, hotels, cafes and other hospitality outlets. These intensive hospitality courses offered by UCOL Polytech cover front-of-house, waiting on customers, bartending, product knowledge, food safety, menu design, reservations and employment law. To put the theory into practice, you’ll serve paying customers at UCOL’s Training Restaurant. Here you’ll work in front-of-house, wait and bartend for café z`lunch, formal dining and special functions.

Support Services

  • Learning Support – The Learning Services staff provide academic support for all students enrolled at UCOL, across all three campuses. The team consists of academic counsellors and specialist tutors who are available to assist students with coursework and study, at all levels. Support is offered in a wide variety of areas, on a “one-to-one” or “small group” basis and tailored to meet individual needs.
  • Libraries – Each UCOL campus has a well equipped Library with a team of experienced and qualified staff to help and advise you. Library resources include books, magazines, DVDs, CD-ROMs, web based and other electronic resources, including laptops available for your use. There are also printing, scanning and photocopying facilities. They are here to help you find information to support your study, to help develop your research skills and to provide easy access to quality resources.
